Fancy Shazam - her name is Heidi. <AustinR build thread

Postby AustinR » Wed Feb 29, 2012 4:49 am

I'll try and make this build thread pic-heavy cuz that's always funzies.
I don't have too many pictures of my car from when I first got it, but it was just a stock e30. Nothing special.

I quickly blacked out the window trim and kidneys.

-wnt- ...it's love.

Then my timing belt busted. At the time I was going to college and didn't have the time or the tools to do an engine swap on my own, so I ordered a new (used) motor and had it put in by some hack job locally. Ohhh what I would do differently now. Live and learn.

Got my car back from the guy and everything was wrong. He had the tps and the iac wires switched, so it ran like crap and the way he fixed it was adjusted the throttle body out so it was always cracked a little. Also a couple injectors were broken, there were various broken tools in the engine bay that I slowly found for a couple years. Total nightmare, but my trusty e30 stood by my side the whole time and was patient with me.

After I got everything straightened out, she went almost 100% problem free for a year and a half, which was perfect, because I happened to not have any extra money for that period of my life because I was living with a buddy of mine in a rented trailer living on minimum wage.

We got some gnarly snow last winter, and that was an absolute blast.
Image

Then I got a roof rack for muh bike. Always liked the look of those.

More snow. This is one of my favorite pics of my e30 to date.

I started having some more fun with her at this point. I had a little money in the bank and she communicated telepathically that she wanted some lovin...things started failing.

Exhaust was leaky, so I got the IE clone from ebay.
Image

Changed a few random things like alternator belt and voltage regulator. I got my gas tank changed with a used one I picked up because my old one leaked. Well the new one has a clogged transfer tube...I went from only being able to fill my tank half way, to having to keep my tank over half full..gah..
Then this past summer I got down and did some werk son.

Water pump left a big puddle for me one morning, so I did the pump and timing belt (not screwing around and using the "old" fairly new one. haha)
Image

Afterwards I was so happy to have her back I did a photo-shoot. haha.

Then I had a crazy vacuum leak going on so I did intake, throttle body, and valve cover gaskets as well as a few vacuum hoses(<the source of the actual leak). I took the opportunity to clean up the head, valve cover, and intake.

I was sick of looking at the bottle caps. haha. Imagine that. So with plans for sweet tires in the future, I picked up some 15x7 et20 BBS RZ's
Also, the shocks were blown, so I picked up some m3 springs because I didn't want to go "too" low and some billie sports.

Needs moar low -lll._.- I'll address that later...

So I finally had my car pretty reliable, which was good, because I took a trip to the west side of the state (~250 miles/longest trip I've ever taken in the car) to do a bicycle frame building class which was really really cool. I made the trip perfect. No problems at all and loved the trip.
Image
One day while I was there I found a leaf laying on the lip of the wheel...keeeewwwllll. I swear I didn't place it. haha.
Image

That brings me to the point where I joined the best forum on the net, e3p!

I had issues with my brakes, and my parking brake had never worked since I bought the car, so I decided to tackle that at the same time. Don't have many pictures from that, but I changed calipers, flexi lines, pads, rotors, parking pads, parking cables, sensors...etc. This is the thread: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=1665

And now we're caught up to today.
Image
Yes, that picture ^ is backwards (mirror image). I took it with film and scanned the negative in upside down. I'm too lazy to switch it. Get over it. haha. My car is not right hand drive and "Thule" is not actually spelled backwards on my roof rack.
Back to chrome grills, back on bottle caps (just for the winter) and a little som'n som'n waiting...

you have a nice camera lol. It's nice to see how well M20s can run with some simple maintenance. E30s just run for freaking ever!

good job man. glad to see the build thread up. Makes me happy.

Those h&r race? You'll lobe them. I feel you on replacing new timing belts. I replaced two in o e week chasing an oil leak on my fresh rebuild, both belts had about 10min of run time each. I wasn't taking chances though.

Looking forward to updates!

Thanks guys!

Yosh, how's the title? 8) And yeah, it's a decent camera. Although any photographer will say "It's not the camera, it's the photographer"....aaaand that's a small bit of b.s. haha.

Tony, yeah those are the "race" springs. I'm pretty excited about putting them in. Just gotta find a day to put them in. Also, you are way more dedicated to the timing belt thing than I. haha. I probably would have re-used that belt...

I would be afraid to start the motor up on for the first time if I dropped that kind of cash into it...lol!

I have H&R race on my car and like them. My big rear sway makes the car quite tail happy.... but that fits my driving style well.

Nah, I have an awesome engine builder. Other than not putting thread sealer on the oil galley plug under the water pump i've never had a problem with it.

Needs moar low and an IS lip...

lol jfwy. Looks great, digging those RZ's. What size tire do you have on them? For whatever reason the wheels look bigger than 15's to me. And you need to make a trip up here so we can do a proper snowey photoshoot both rocking bottlecaps haha.

Lol. Yeah, I'm planning on a trip up there. It might be more like spring time though, which has been all winter down here still... You guys have a bunch of snow up there right now?
You still got those sport seats? If so, you said they need a whole reupholster, right? I want to get new seats so if you've still got those I'm gonna look into what it would cost to re-cover them.

Oh yeah, we have been absolutely hammered the last couple days, I honestly would not be surprised if we have a total of 24" since Sunday morning. Here was the view from my window earlier today:
Image
And unfortunately I don't have the sports seats anymore... Gave them to someone else that came up and visited in exchange for a good rear seat lol.
