Post Electric locks
Hey guys,

So I noticed the description for the electrical sub forum mentioned something about electric locks being on the fritz. I downloaded the electrical troubleshooting manual, however, I can't really make heads or tails of it...still working on my electrical hieroglyphics understanding...

Anyway, I do have the problem where I need to lock/unlock my car from the trunk. Is this indicative of the lock controller having shit the bed?

The lock tumblers in both cabin doors are pretty worn out and need rebuilding, but they still turn with almost key breaking effort, even after copious lubrication. Sometimes this will lock/unlock the driver side door alone, but never the pass. door.

Finally, is there a way to delete the power lock system? I'm more of a fan of manual everything, but I am torn about removing the power feature and a future option to alarm the vehicle...when it may one day be worth stealing

Thank you in advance for the input! I apologize if this topic has been visited before and I missed it in a search.

Cool. Once I get the car out of the barn in a few weeks, I'm going to remove the lock tumbler and have it rebuilt on the driver's side alone. Then I'll fuss with the lock motor, see if disconnecting it works.

I'll update when it happens!

I don't think any e30 ever came with all manual locks, even the 323i I worked on had the central locking. I also have never heard of anyone rebuilding the tumblers, not even sure if you can get new replacement parts for them. I would just replace the central locking unit and get a couple new tumblers keyed to your ignition key. Do you have a locking glove box? If so either get that re-keyed at the same time, or swap the latch out for a non- keyed handle since the locking ones always break anyway.

What do you want to repair? I usually just take mine out, rip it apart, grease it, and shove it back in lol.

Post Re: Electric locks
I guess that would be the way to go. I should have said at the beginning of this thread that I read a DIY post about two years ago which I have based most of my limited opinion regarding locks and their demons on. It included putting new tumblers in the locks.

Anybody have any good instructions on how to take the locks out of the doors?

Thanks!

Bentley Manual will have step by step, if you don't have one they are well worth the money.
