Rack and Pinion Rebuild

Post by beemnmatt » Fri Apr 30, 2010 8:19 pm

Okay, here goes the write up, e36 rack and pinion reseal

Before we start I removed the "nut and spring" that put tension on the rack shaft
Image
1. Clean the rack!
2. Remove plastic cover on the steering spindle and remove the circle clip
Image
3. Remove the 22mm nut on the bottom of the steering tower, and remove the inner 13mm cadmium plated lock-nut
Image
Image
Image
4. Tap out the pinion gear from the bottom. At this point, steering fluid will pour out so make sure you have a catch can handy.
Image
5. Remove the rightmost air crossover fitting from the rack (this is the one attached to the plastic hose).
Image
6. Pry out the large metal ring from the rack through the plastic fitting's hole. Be careful not to mar the hole, otherwise the air crossover fitting may leak.
Image
7. Tap the end of the rack that has the teeth with a hammer, be careful lots of fluid may leak out
Image
8. You can now pull out the rack. Inspect it for corrosion, and if there is, buff it out with very fine grade sandpaper (400 grit) in a circumferential pattern
Image
9. There are two important seals here that should be fairly straightforward to see.
Image
This one, just get something to catch the lip, and tap with a hammer, you can see I used a breaker bar and tapped the seal out with a hammer
Image
10. Remove the bottom bearing in the steering tower. You will now have access to the pinion ring seal. Drive this seal out and reinstall the new seal
Again, find something to catch the lip, it pops right out
Image
Image
11. Replace the four o-rings and 4 sealing rings on the pinion gear.
Image
my kit came with one seal to replace the two that I removed, they are almost the same thickness
Image
Dont forget to replace the seal attached to the rack shaft and the one that slides off the pinion shaft
Image
12. Clean the rack and re-grease the rack. Reinstall the rack, slide the moving seal onto the rack, noting direction, then replace the end retaining ring.
13. Reassembly is pretty much the reverse of dis-assembly. Make sure to re-grease everything! (shaft and pinion)

top notch write up, sticky for you. My only suggestion is to change the thread title so it easy to search for, like rack rebuild or something.

Very well done!

if you decide to continue improving this I suggest supplying part numbers and/or links to where you sourced the parts.

I think any E36 rack should work.

any no, still waiting on link for the seal kit cuz I'm too lazy to look for it myself.

do some research before you buy that ti rack, IIRC different models of the e36 chassis came with racks with different ratios. The 318ti got the bottom of the barrel parts for everything else, I assume the rack is the least desirable. This is all speculation, which is why I suggest you do some research on your own.

Well the ratios are different, but I'm not sure on the seals.

the kit i found has 24 seals, the one in the DIY has 23... seems like it would be worth it to try it out. I'll order it and let you guys know, unless anyone can confirm that it won't work
